The Horses

Please enjoy this archival album of the horses that Charles de Kunffy trained during his classical horsemanship education in Budapest, Hungary.

Some may wonder why this archive contains primarily stadium and cross-country jumping pictures when Charles was also trained in dressage. 1956, a quarter-million Hungarians, including Charles de Kunffy, fled the country to escape the brutal invasion of Soviet communists. The Ambassador of Italy was called upon to save Charles's precious photo albums. Sadly he was only able to seize the album of jumping images.

Regoly

Please notice the huge crowds and the
many flags. The horse was a difficult stallion, called Regoly. Often sullen and morose, he was hard to interest or amuse. He worked for me as a great favor and disliked others.

I hope that you recognize, from earlier issues of the Journal, my horse, Sator, the only mare I trained. . . Her shape changed too as she developed a lovely neck and slimmed down to a well-toned beauty.

Sator

This amazing jumper was called Sator, which translates “Tent.” My riding friends kidded me that she looked like one, rather than looking like a horse. I “begged” for her as a riding horse for me after I spotted her hitched to the hay wagon and jugging for a living. She became one of my favorites horses.

Kormend

You can see Kormend again, one of my six assigned horses, jumping beautifully. The picture conveys two happy fellows being
ignored by a herd of horses in the background who in turn are busy ignoring us.
